Huanggang Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Its type section is located at Huanggang (E118°48′, N32°29′), southeast of Maji town, Liuhe County, 20 km north of Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province. It was named by Bi et al. (1977).
Synonym: Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources of Jiangsu Province (BGMRJ(Jiangsu)P) (1997) assigned the Huanggang Fm as a synonym of the Yuhuati Fm and correlated the former to the middle part of the latter. Gao et al. (2014a) treated the FangshanBasalt Fm, the Lingyanshan Fm, and the Guiwu Fm as synonyms of the Huanggang Fm
Lithology and Thickness
The Huanggang Fm is divided into two members. Lower member consists of greyish-cyan or greyish-green mudstones, muddy dolomites, and gravels interbedded with olivine basalts. Upper member is characterized by brick-red, brownish-yellow, greyish-green, brownish-grey, and greyish-yellow gravels, sandstones, siltstones, and deep red tuffaceous gravels with thin basalt layers. It contains mammalian fossils. Its thickness is in range of 15~70 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
In the type section, the Huanggang Fm disconformably contacts with the underlying XiaopanshanBasalt Fm. Regionally, the next older unit is the Liuhe Fm.
Upper contact
In the type section, the Huanggang Fm disconformably is overlain by the PingshanBasalt Fm (similar to JianshanBasalt Fm ?)
Regional extent
This formation is widely distributed to region ranging Jiangning, Liuhe, Xiaopanshan, Fangshan, Renjiaju, Huanggang, Chenxiangying, and Xuyi, Jiangsu Province.
